<p>Apartments and buildings are gradually becoming smarter, more adaptable and more efficient. The rapid progress of smart living technology is leading to broader digital control of living environments and the analysis of consumption data. However, due to various technical and organizational barriers, data from applications cannot be easily transferred to other providers or independent solutions to use them flexibly or exploit synergies in data collection. As a&#xa0;result, private individuals face the challenge of fully exploiting the potential of their data from smart living applications and using it independently and across platforms. The article examines the mutual influencing factors for data-based service providers and private individuals to make data from an application in the smart living sector usable for other data-based services. A&#xa0;model for the retrieval and use of private individuals’ own data is derived from the results. The model shows the added value that results from the comprehensive use of data and in which cases service providers can also benefit from active participation in data sharing. The model serves as a&#xa0;reference within and outside the smart living sector.</p>
