<p>Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face the challenge of remaining competitive in an increasingly data-driven economy, but often have limited resources for building data skills. To support these companies, the project DataLab WestSax was set up as a&#xa0;real-world laboratory, a&#xa0;test room for data usage ideas, to promote data-based innovation. Based on the findings from the cooperation between research and industry in the project, this article discusses how SMEs can successfully implement data-based value creation. Methodologically, the study is based on the concept of engaged scholarship. Four key principles for successful data-based value creation in SMEs are derived from the analysis of seven selected cooperation projects within DataLab WestSax: basic data literacy for all employees, precise data communication, use of knowledge transfer and opportunistic development of data value creation capacities. The results show that SMEs often go through a&#xa0;process of “data bricolage”—a&#xa0;pragmatic and creative use of existing resources. This is in contrast to the often propagated, highly formalized and resource-intensive approaches to data value creation, which are not feasible for many SMEs. Data bricolage proves to be a&#xa0;necessary step for many SMEs on the way to professionalizing their data value creation. The principles presented in the article can serve as a&#xa0;guideline for SMEs to develop their infrastructure, increase their data competence and ultimately strengthen their competitiveness in an increasingly data-driven economy.</p>
