<p>University teaching is being transformed by advancing digitalization, with distance learning universities becoming increasingly important as they offer flexibility and compatibility with professional and family commitments. One major challenge, however, is the potential social isolation of students. Synchronous events with gamification elements are being discussed as solutions to promote interaction and a&#xa0;sense of community and thus ultimately social integration in distance learning. This article shows that virtual escape rooms can be used to positively influence social integration in distance learning and offers a&#xa0;detailed description of the approach and design as a&#xa0;blueprint for other institutions.</p>
