<p>Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) stands as an essential tool for treating acute and chronic respiratory failure while providing most advantages to AECOPD patients and CPE patients.</p><p>NIV faces ongoing debates about the criteria for patient selection as well as interface choices ventilator settings timing of NIV initiation and discontinuation monitoring and its usage for ARDS and postextubation respiratory failure patients.</p><p>This review examines these controversies through evidence-based assessments of various viewpoints while introducing recent breakthroughs that may shape future NIV management practices particularly through high flow nasal cannula.</p>
