摘要

Background

Feeding challenges are frequently observed in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These challenges may manifest as selective eating, refusal of food, disruptive behaviors during mealtime, and ritualistic eating habits. Such behaviors not only influence the child’s nutritional intake but also create considerable stress for caregivers, potentially impacting family routines and relationships. The Brief Autism Mealtime Behavior Inventory (BAMBI) is a caregiver-reported tool that evaluates mealtime behavior. This cross-sectional study aimed to translate and validate BAMBI into Marathi (BAMBI-Ma), addressing the need for culturally appropriate tools for the Marathi-speaking population.

Results

The BAMBI was translated into Marathi using the Eremenco protocol methodology described by Eremenco et al, which included forward and backward translation, reconciliation, review for linguistic and conceptual equivalence, and expert validation. A total of 58 participants were included in the study. The BAMBI-Ma was administered on parents of children with ASD (n = 29) and typically developing children (n = 29). The tool demonstrated strong internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.87). Significant differences were found between the ASD and typically developing groups, supporting good discriminant validity (p < 0.001). Additionally, a moderate to strong positive correlation (r = 0.528) was observed between BAMBI-Ma and the Marathi version of the Behavioral Pediatric Feeding Assessment Scale, indicating convergent validity. Findings should be interpreted cautiously given the modest overall sample and small test–retest subset.

Conclusion

The BAMBI-Ma serves as a reliable and valid instrument for the evaluation of mealtime behaviors in Marathi-speaking children with ASD. Its use can facilitate early identification of feeding difficulties and guide intervention planning in clinical and research settings.
