Background <p>This study explores the relation between hearing loss and hyperacusis in geriatric individuals aged 65 and older. Hearing loss, particularly presbycusis, significantly impacts cognitive and social functions, while hyperacusis increased sensitivity to sound further complicates auditory processing in older adults. The aim of this study is to assess the correlation between hearing thresholds and hyperacusis severity, as measured by the Khalfa Hyperacusis Questionnaire (KHQ).</p> Methods&#xa0; <p>The study involved 42 participants, with pure tone audiometry conducted to assess hearing loss and the KHQ used to evaluate hyperacusis. </p> Results <p>A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the Khalfa Hyperacusis scores and the pure tone average thresholds of the right ear (<i>r</i> = 0.392, <i>p</i> = 0.010) and left ear (<i>r</i> = 0.311, <i>p</i> = 0.045). Furthermore, the study revealed a strong correlation between right and left ear thresholds (<i>r</i> = 0.812, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.01).</p> Conclusions <p>The findings suggest that hyperacusis severity is linked to auditory threshold values, underscoring the importance of including hearing assessments in the evaluation of hyperacusis. These results highlight the need for specialized audiological evaluations and interventions in older adults. Future research should further investigate the mechanisms underlying hyperacusis to develop more effective treatment strategies.</p>

Background
