Background <p>Omega-3 improves oxidative stress in pediatric end-stage renal disease patients.</p> Objectives <p>This study assessed omega-3 supplementation on oxidative stress and nutritional markers in pediatric end-stage renal disease patients undergoing regular hemodialysis.</p> Methods <p>This randomized, placebo-controlled trial involved 60 end-stage renal disease patients undergoing regular hemodialysis. The participants were&#xa0;assigned randomly into two groups: In addition to conservative management, the study group received 1&#xa0;g/day of omega-3 supplements, while the control group received an oral placebo for 6&#xa0;months. Anthropometric measurements, and laboratory investigations including oxidative stress markers (glutathione peroxidase and human thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) were assessed at the&#xa0;start point and after 6&#xa0;months.</p> Results <p>Following 6&#xa0;months of omega-3 supplementation, a decrease in serum total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, serum triglycerides, and C-reactive protein were noted in the study group. Glutathione peroxidase levels considerably increased (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.002) and serum thiobarbituric acid reactive substances significantly decreased (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001) following omega-3 treatment.</p> Conclusion <p>Omega-3 supplementation can be a beneficial complementary therapy combined with conservative management that&#xa0;can reduce oxidative stress markers in pediatric end-stage renal disease patients undergoing regular hemodialysis.</p> Trial registration <p>ClinicalTrials.gov (ID: NCT06268184).</p>

Background
