<p>Inulin is a fructan prebiotic composed of β-(2 → 1)-linked fructose units that selectively modulates the gut microbiota and increases short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production. As a prebiotic, inulin has been reported to have benefits such as improved mineral absorption, lipid metabolism, and glycemic regulation, supporting its use in managing obesity, diabetes, and various gastrointestinal diseases. In addition to its nutritional benefits, inulin is used in the food and pharmaceutical sectors for its functional attributes as a stabilizing agent and a bioavailability enhancer. Pairing inulin with probiotics (synbiotics) may amplify clinical effects. Inulin is generally safe and well-tolerated prebiotic; however, optimal dosing, disease-specific use, and long-term safety require more well-designed human trials. This review summarizes advances in inulin’s mechanism, health implications, and inulin-based synbiotic preparations.</p>
