<p>The liver and kidneys are two of the most essential organs responsible for maintaining the internal balance of the body’s physiological functions. Meanwhile, calcium carbide usage in food processing and acetylene production has increase significantly in recent time and little or no report has shown its toxicological impacts in diets. Hence, the aim of this study is to evaluate the toxic effects of calcium carbide-supplemented diets on liver and kidney function in Wistar rats. Twenty four (24) animals were randomly selected into 4 group (n = 6) and fed with 0%, 10%, 20% and 40% CaC2-supplemented diet, respectively for 28&#xa0;days. The animals were sacrificed and liver and renal tissues were processed for antioxidant assay while blood samples were collected for serum urea, creatinine, AST, ALT, and ALP assay. Our results revealed an elevated serum urea, creatinine, AST, ALT, and ALP levels, along with depleted kidney and liver antioxidant defenses as well as increased lipid peroxidation, in 10%, 20% and 40%-calcium carbide supplemented diet. Conclusively, calcium carbide-supplemented diet is associated with kidney and liver toxicity which is linked to depleted antioxidant defense mechanisms.</p>
