<p>Randomized clinical trials (RCT) are considered the gold standard for studies with dietary interventions, which is mainly due to the fact that they can establish causal relationships between food exposure or dietary patterns and body composition measures or biomarkers. We conducted a double-blind RCT (Brazilian Registry RBR-8d85hs4, UTN code: U1111-1232–5349) with a 14-day intervention period to evaluate the health effects of exposure to different diets (based on various conventional and organic foods) in healthy adults. Urine samples were collected from participants for insecticide quantification, and blood samples were taken to assess biochemical and genotoxic markers at the beginning and end of the intervention. The 49 study participants were distributed between the conventional group (<i>n</i> = 25) and the organic group (<i>n</i> = 24). Initially, we detected 24 insecticides in the participants’ urine levels. After the intervention, pesticide levels dropped by an average of 98.6% for the organic diet and 66.2% for the conventional diet. Pyrethroid insecticides decreased from 4.6&#xa0;µg/L to non-detectable levels in the organic group and increased from 0.18 to 0.34&#xa0;µg/L in the conventional group. After the intervention, all biochemical markers were within established normal limits. Genetic damage was observed in both groups after the intervention, and the percentage of DNA damage repair was significantly higher in the organic group after the intervention. Our data suggest that exposure to insecticides, especially pyrethroids, may be associated with diet, and organic foods may have a stronger relationship with DNA damage repair mechanisms.
