Flexural strengthening of RC beams with NSM technique by vertical and inclined orientation of CFRP laminate
摘要
Retrofitting of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with FRP materials addresses issues of structural deterioration, offering a robust alternative to traditional steel reinforcement. This study experimentally investigates the flexural strengthening of RC beams using near-surface mounted (NSM) carbon fiber–reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates placed in vertical (90°) and inclined (60°) orientations. Six beams, four strengthened and two control beams made up that were tested. The results revealed that NSM CFRP greatly improved ductility, flexural capacity, and delayed failure. The average ultimate load improved by almost 63% and 91% for the NSM-vertical orientation and NSM- inclined orientation beams, over control beams respectively, from 97 kN for the control beams to 158 kN and 185 kN. NSM inclined orientation achieved an ultimate load capacity that was around 17% greater than vertically oriented laminates. Additionally, inclined laminates allowed for higher CFRP strain at failure and delayed crack initiation, frequently leading to combined debonding and rupture modes. Overall, the findings confirm that NSM CFRP is a useful method for increasing the strength and serviceability of RC beams, especially in inclined configurations.
