Investigating the impact of the future road networks on the spatial integrations in a multicultural Pattani City, Thailand: a space syntax approach

Pattani City is in the process of preparing a new comprehensive plan for the year 2022, which emphasizes the establishment of an appropriate land use strategy for various applications. The development of new roads, along with the enhancement of existing roadways, represents a fundamental component of this initiative. The current study aims to illustrate how the upcoming road network plan outlined in the comprehensive planning document for the year 2015 will modify the existing street network configurations within urban land-use zoning, employing the space syntax methodology. This research encompasses two primary objectives. Firstly, it seeks to conduct an inquiry focusing on the period subsequent to the implementation of the proposed road network as specified in the comprehensive plan. Secondly, it aims to analyze the extent to which such development can be evaluated concerning the effects of the spatial organization of the street network and land-use zoning within the core urban area of Pattani. The analysis of spatial integration within the road network is discussed in relation to the changes observed in the transportation plan preceding and following the execution of both future and current roads. These findings provide a reflective, evidence-based examination of space syntax theories, demonstrating how future roadways are interconnected. The type of transportation plan imposed on the road networks influences the resultant spatial distribution of land-use zones. Religious institutions and low-density residential areas typically position themselves along streets characterized by high spatial integration. Therefore, the implications of future road network planning for the locational patterns of land-use zoning in the neighborhood centers of Pattani are vital for the development of sustainable urban centers.
