Effectiveness of existential group psychotherapy in reducing perceived rejection and anxiety among individuals with psychiatric disorders and comorbid substance use disorder: an experimental study
摘要
In recent years, humanistic approaches have gained considerable popularity in treating individuals with psychiatric disorders and comorbid substance use disorders. Among these, existential therapy is one of the most prominent. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of existential group psychotherapy in reducing perceived rejection and anxiety in this population.
MethodsThis experimental study utilized a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up design with a control group. The study population comprised individuals with psychiatric disorders and comorbid substance use disorder admitted to Razi Psychiatric Hospital during the first half of 2024. Participants were recruited through convenience sampling and randomly assigned to either the experimental group (n = 30) or the control group (n = 30) using a random number table. Measures included the Perceived Rejection Scale, the DASS-21 Anxiety Subscale, and the Existential Group Psychotherapy Protocol. Participants were reassessed two months after completion of the intervention. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 22.
ResultsFindings showed a significant reduction in perceived rejection and anxiety in the experimental group receiving existential group psychotherapy compared to the control group (P < 0.01). These results support the efficacy of existential group psychotherapy in alleviating these symptoms among individuals with psychiatric disorders and comorbid substance use disorder.
ConclusionThis study confirms that existential group psychotherapy effectively reduces perceived rejection and anxiety in this population. To promote the widespread adoption of this intervention, policymakers and stakeholders in mental health and substance use treatment should consider implementing relevant policies and mechanisms to facilitate its integration into specialized services.
