Assessment of Hot Weather Concreting Practiced in Bangladesh

Hot weather problems are normally met in the summer season. Climatic situations of high winds, low humidity, and high solar radiation can occur, especially in hot weather. At this time concreting in high temperatures needs special precaution. This study deals to assess the measure taken to handle the hot weather concreting practiced in different projects of Bangladesh. Accordingly, six large construction projects in Dhaka, Bangladesh, were surveyed and visited to study the hot weather concreting procedures. Senior officials of the construction teams were questioned during this procedure, and questionnaires were used to gather data on various hot weather concreting concerns. Additionally, the Bangladesh Building Code and other authoritative sources of literature have been checked for conformity with the hot weather concreting procedures used in various construction sites. After analyzing the results from the questionnaire survey, BNBC, and other current construction techniques found in the literature, recommendations and guidelines for correctly handling hot weather concreting are finally put forward. This study has shown that concrete in hot weather needs to be carefully prepared. A pre-concreting meeting is suggested to go over the plan for managing the concreting during hot weather. Using materials that have a track record of performing well in hot environments, cooling concrete materials or concrete mixtures, providing consistent manpower and equipment for quick placement, cutting down on transport times, scheduling placement to minimize exposure to atmospheric conditions, planning to minimize rapid moisture loss, and considering the use of evaporation retarders are other strategies that can help. Therefore, appropriate measures must be taken at each stage of the hot weather concreting process, including material storage, concrete mixing, transportation, placement, finishing, curing, and concrete cube casting for testing, to produce better and longer-lasting concrete.
