The role of Ethiopian women on climate change adaptation and mitigation using soil and water conservation: study from the Delanta District South Wollo Zone
摘要
Ethiopia, a nation that heavily relies on rainfall for its agricultural practices, is being disproportionately affected by climate change. Women are playing a vital role in addressing this issue, drawing on their unique experiences and resilience.
MethodsThe study gathered data through a variety of methods including questionnaires, interviews, and observations using random sampling techniques. Statistical analyses, such as percentiles, cumulative frequencies, standard deviations, chi-square tests, and SPSS, were utilized to examine the collected data.
ResultsThe research has shown that women make a substantial contribution to environmental restoration and food security compared to men. The study revealed the necessity for a collaborative effort to enhance women's involvement in Sustainable Watershed Management Committees (SWC). Women play a vital role in the management of crucial resources, such as land, water, livestock, biodiversity, and food. They dedicate a significant amount of time to generating income and carry out a disproportionate share of daily household and community tasks. Despite constituting 59% of the labor force in the study area, women's contributions are frequently undervalued, and they face limited access to resources. This limitation impedes their capacity to adapt to climate change, ensure environmental sustainability, and food security. Furthermore, women often receive insufficient post-disaster aid and are marginalized from decision-making processes.
ConclusionsTo guarantee the active participation of women in development programs that involve the transfer of new technology and training, it is imperative for governments, legislators, and other stakeholders to prioritize their involvement. Establishing counseling systems that promote women's participation in these programs is highly recommended. Moreover, there should be a strong emphasis on providing appropriate education and training opportunities to support women in successfully engaging in these activities.
