Distribution of serogroup and pathogenicity Island markers of uropathogenic Escherichia coli from inpatients in a tertiary care hospital

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) are associated with considerable prolonged hospital stay and morbidity worldwide. This work was proposed to study Pathogenicity Island (PAI) markers (as an element containing some important virulence genes) and O-antigen serogroups related to UPECs obtained from inpatients with urinary disorders. This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on a total of 126 no repetitive UPEC isolates from three Shiraz teaching hospitals. Isolates were identified using standard microbiological procedures. The PAIs and serogroups genes were screened using PCR.
ResultsO-serogroups were identified in 67 (53.1%) of the UPEC isolates. Overall, serotype O25 had the highest incidence (n = 26; 20.8%). Serogroups of O4, O6, O7, O16 and O21 were not detected in our isolates. All of isolates carried at least one of the examined PAI markers. PAI IV536 was the most prevalent PAI (97; 77.6%), followed by PAI II536 (32; 25.6%), PAI III536 (13; 10.4%) and PAI I536 (12; 9.6%). Among serogroups, O25 showed the highest frequency among PAIs.
ConclusionThe results of current study enhance the understanding of the importance of serogroups and PAI that could be a beneficial tool for detecting pathogenic UPEC which can be used to develop treatments and prevention strategies for UTIs.
