Background <p>Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection and is the principal cause of cervical cancer. Despite several regional reports from Iran, comprehensive and updated data on HPV prevalence and genotype distribution among women in Isfahan, central Iran, remain limited. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of HPV infection and HPV types in the recordings of women referred for genital HPV screening to a Medical Laboratory in Isfahan, central Iran.</p> Methods <p>In this retrospective study, HPV PCR and genotyping results of 4,973 women and their available demographic data screened between 2015 and 2024 at a referral laboratory in Isfahan were collected, analyzed and reported.</p> Results <p>Of 4,973 women screened, 819 (16.5%) tested HPV-positive. HPV6 was the most common genotype (9.2%). Among HPV-positive women, high-risk types were slightly more frequent than low-risk types (55.2% vs. 44.8%), with HPV16 (14.4%) the most prevalent high-risk genotype, followed by HPV53 (13.2%) and HPV18 (6.2%). HPV positivity was highest in women under 20 years of age (27.3%; <i>P</i> = 0.002).</p> Conclusion <p>Based on the results of the present study, the rate of HPV infection in Isfahan was high, yet comparable to that reported in several other regions in Iran. More than half of HPV-positive women were infected with high-risk types in Isfahan area. Among the tested population, the highest positivity was observed in women under 20 years old.</p>

Background

Methods
