The role of technology in tackling social isolation and maintaining mental health among older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic
摘要
This study explored the experiences of older adults in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S., particularly related to their mental health, social isolation, and the role technology played in helping them stay connected. Technology includes communication devices, applications, social media, tele-health and digital in-home equipment. The study intended to answer the research question: What are older adults’ mental health and social isolation-related experiences in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, and how did technology shape those experiences?
MethodsData were collected through one-on-one, in-depth interviews with community-dwelling (in the community and independent living facilities) older adults (N = 29), ages 65 years and older (Mean age = 72 years; 86% female), and conducted via phone/Zoom. The interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed thematically using NVivo12.
ResultsThe study revealed three main themes: (a) COVID-19 increased social isolation and disconnectedness, (b) increase in mental health distress, and (c) technology improved connectedness and mental health. Findings revealed that participants experienced increased social isolation and disconnectedness and an overall decrease in mental health during the pandemic. Mental health stressors included anxiety, loneliness, depression, and frustration. Participants demonstrated resilience and innovation by learning new skills, and technology played an important role in helping participants stay connected and maintain their mental and physical wellbeing.
ConclusionFindings suggest that pandemic-related precautionary measures should take the isolating effects of lockdowns and social distancing on older adults into consideration. Public health efforts should focus on developing and expanding innovative technology to promote social connectedness and the wellbeing of older adults.
