摘要

Purpose

To analyze the impact of periodontal disease on the physical and psychosocial dimensions of Brazilian adults evaluated in the SBBrasil 2010 epidemiological survey.

Methods

A cross-sectional approach was used with data from adults aged 35 to 44 years (n = 9778) from the National Oral Health Survey. The Community Periodontal Index (CPI) and the Periodontal Attachment Loss Index (PALI) defined the presence of periodontal disease. A questionnaire collected demographic, socioeconomic, and dental service utilization data, as well as the impact on daily performance (OIDP). Statistical analysis included hierarchical binary logistic regression with OIDP as the outcome.

Results

The highest reported difficulties in the OIDP were eating, brushing teeth, smiling or speaking, and working or studying. Periodontal disease was associated with a greater impact on daily performance (OR = 1.45, 95% CI 1.27–1.66), in addition to other sociodemographic and clinical factors.

Conclusion

Periodontal disease significantly affects the daily activities of Brazilian adults, even after adjustments for multiple factors, highlighting the need for oral health promotion policies targeted at this population.
