Objective <p>To compare the evolution of anthropometric indicators in preterm newborns (NB) submitted to the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) method and the Conventional Hospitalization Method (CHM), through the construction of growth curves, in a neonatal intensive care complex of a high-risk maternity hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Methods: A retrospective longitudinal study using medical record data of preterm newborns born between January 2018 and December 2019. Data collected included weight, length, head circumference, and Intergrowth-21st growth curve classification, according to sex and age. Maternal sociodemographic data were also collected. Means and standard deviations of continuous variables were calculated after normality testing. For categorical variables, significant differences were evaluated using the chi-square test (<i>p</i>-value &lt; 0.05). Growth curves were constructed based on the hospitalization method, differentiated by sex, using generalized additive mixed models. Results: The CHM group had a higher proportion of single pregnancies (61.7%, <i>p</i> = 0.017) and single mothers (50.8%, <i>p</i> = 0.025). The length of hospital stay was significantly shorter in the KMC group (26.7&#xa0;days, SD = 14.5), while discharge length was higher in the CHM group (45.5&#xa0;cm, SD = 4.1). Growth curves for weight, length, and head circumference in the KMC group were more homogeneous compared to the CHM group. Conclusion: The results indicate better growth patterns in the KMC group than in the CHM group, suggesting the importance of public policies promoting humanized care in neonatal health.</p>
