Content analysis of HIV self testing education on TikTok
摘要
In 2016, the World Health Organization officially recommended HIV self-testing (HIVST) to promote privacy and encourage more persons to test for their HIV status. Despite the availability of this service, more than 5.4 million people are living with HIV who don’t know their status. With over 800 million users, TikTok is a platform that has been used to educate and promote HIVST. Hence, this study conducted a content analysis of HIVST education videos on TikTok. We searched for videos on TikTok using keywords such as ‘HIV self-testing’, and ‘HIV”, among others between the 24th December 2022 and the 5th of January 2023. Videos in languages other than English were not eligible for this study. The Medical Quality Video Evaluation Tool (MQ-VET) was used to evaluate the content of the videos. A total of 108 videos uploaded between October 2020 and January 2023 were analyzed, of which 78 met the inclusion criteria. Most videos (78.2%) focused primarily on instructions for using HIV self-testing (HIVST) kits, while 21.4% also covered topics like HIV awareness, symptoms, debunking myths, and combating stigmatization alongside HIVST education. The mean MQ-VET scores for the videos were 42.38 ± 16.37. This study revealed that non-governmental organizations and healthcare professionals who have sound knowledge, expertise, and understanding of HIVST were not actively involved in the dissemination of HIVST education on TikTok. Therefore, this widely used platform should be leveraged by experts in partnership with influencers to push accurate and simplified information on HIV self-testing.
