摘要

Background

Management of health information remains a critical aspect that leverages primary health care (PHC) performance. Just like many low and middle-income countries, Malawi strives to improve performance of PHC through among others the use of evidence–based decision making. This study sought to evaluate the technical, behavioural and organizational determinants in the management of health information system in Malawi.

Methods

This was a qualitative exploratory research study where decision-makers at each level of PHC were engaged using key-informant interviews (KII) and focus group discussions (FGDs). The study targeted three levels of PHC, namely the district health centres and the ministry headquarters.

Results

We found that Malawi’s PHC system lacks sufficient capacity to enhance technical, behavioural and organizational determinants in its management of information system. Though management of performance information system is regarded as key in improving PHC, Malawi’s PHC system has not fully embarked on making this a priority. Some challenges include unsupportive culture and inadequate capacity.
