Background <p>Multiple sexual partnerships are associated with a higher risk of sexually transmitted infections. This study aims to determine the prevalence and predictors of multiple sexual partnerships among men in South Africa.</p> Methods <p>This is a cross-sectional study using data from the 2016 South African Demographic and Health Survey, with a sample of 3,616 males aged 15–59 years.</p> Results <p>The prevalence rate of multiple sexual partnerships among men was 15,6%. Logistic regression results showed that the rate decreased with age: 25–34 years (AOR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.34– 0.70), 35–44 years (AOR = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.16–0.42), and 45–59 years (AOR = 0.14, 95% CI: 0.07–0.25) using age 15–24 as reference category, but higher in rural areas (AOR = 1.80, 95% CI:1.23–2.62); and among men who had sexual debut before 16 years (AOR = 2.28, 95% CI: 1.32–3.94); men who had heard about STIs (AOR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.15–2.19), transactional sex (AOR = 3.59, 95% CI: 2.20–5.86), coming from middle (AOR = 1.57, 95% CI: 1.07–2.30), and rich wealth index households (AOR = 1.75, 95% CI: 1.08–2.84), and higher when the recent sexual partner was an acquaintance (AOR = 1.97, 95% CI: 1.37–2.84).</p> Conclusion <p>Intervention should be provided at all societal levels. Information and protective measures should be intensified for young men, alongside campaigns aimed at discouraging early sexual debut at a young age.</p>

Background
