The influence of ocular biological parameters on visual range after implantation of extended depth of focus intraocular lens

To investigate the influence of ocular biological parameters on visual range following the implantation of extended depth of focus intraocular lens (EDOF IOLs).
MethodsA total of 92 patients (120 eyes) who underwent phacoemulsification with the implantation of the EDOF IOL (Tecnis® Symfony® ZXR00) were enrolled. Ocular biological parameters, including pupil diameter (PD), corneal curvature, axial length and others were measured by IOL Master 700 and Sirius before surgery. The monocular defocus curve was measured from + 2.0D to -4.0D at 3 months postoperatively. Visual range was defined as the continuous range of visual acuity maintained at 0.2 logMAR or better on the defocus curve.The relationship between ocular biological parameters and visual range was explored.
ResultsThe analysis revealed that age and corneal astigmatism (ΔK) were negatively linearly correlated with the visual range. Notably, restricted cubic spline analysis identified significant nonlinear relationships between visual range and PD, mean curvature of anterior corneal surface (MKa), as well as mean curvature of posterior corneal surface (MKp), exhibiting threshold effects at specific critical points. As PD, MKa, and MKp increase, the visual range initially increases and then decreases, reaching its peak at PD = 2.67 mm, MKa = 43.90 D, and MKp = -6.33 D, all of which are close to their mean values.
ConclusionThe relationship between PD, MKa and MKp with visual range was found to be nonlinear, whereas ΔK exhibited a negative linear correlation with visual range. These biological parameters can serve as predictors for the outcomes of EDOF IOLs to a certain extent, thereby providing a practical foundation for clinical decision-making.
