Cultural factors influencing the sexual health concepts of Chinese older adults and implications for nursing work: a scoping review

Systematically assess the cultural factors influencing the concept of sexual health among Chinese older adults, and provide clinical insights for nursing staff.
MethodThis study followed Arksey and O’Malley’s scope review framework and conducted a systematic search across PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO, CNKI, Wanfang Data, VIP Database from the establishment of the database until December 31, 2025. Two researchers screened these articles and extracted data.
ResultA total of 2,823 studies were retrieved, and 17 studies were finally included. The sexual health concept of older adults in China is influenced by multiple cultural factors, mainly including: Traditional culture and values, Family and intergenerational dynamics, Societal Stigma and Ageism, Shifting Cultural Values.
ConclusionThe sexual health concepts of elderly Chinese people are influenced by the interaction of multiple cultural factors. Nursing staff need to adopt effective culturally sensitive measures in clinical work for geriatric care.
