Level of knowledge and affecting factors regarding isolation precautions of emergency health workers: a cross-sectional multicenter study
摘要
Emergency service workers are exposed to many hazards associated with infectious diseases while providing fast, effective and quality health care. The aim of the study is to determine the knowledge scores of emergency healthcare workers regarding isolation measures for protection against infectious diseases and the related factors.
MethodsThis cross-sectional, descriptive and multicentre study was conducted with 168 healthcare workers. The data were obtained through ‘Personal Information Form’, ‘Behaviour Form’ and ‘Information Form’ structured on the subject. The cut-off value for the total information score was determined using ROC analysis. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to identify the variables affecting the total information score.
ResultsThe ROC analysis determined that the most appropriate cut-off value for the total information score regarding isolation measures is 22.5. Among emergency healthcare workers, 69.9% of nurses scored below the cut-off value, while the knowledge level among physicians was higher at 69.4%. Educational status (B = 1.479, p < 0.001) was determined to be the variable with the strongest effect on the total knowledge score. 17.3% of employees reported injuries in the last six months, but only 34.5% of injuries were reported. 37.5% of employees stated that they did not use personal protective equipment, with the highest percentage citing the “need to move quickly in an emergency” as an obstacle to using personal protective equipment.
ConclusionsIt was determined that the total knowledge score regarding isolation measures among emergency healthcare workers was higher among physicians, and that the most important factor affecting the knowledge score was the level of education. Continuing education programmes should be organised for employees, and their compliance with isolation precaution guidelines should be frequently monitored and encouraged.
Clinical trial registrationThere is no clinical trial registration. This is not applicable as it is an observational study.
