Abstract <p>The results of a study of the influence of heat treatment of the WC–9% Co hard alloy by nanosecond pulses of ultraviolet laser on structural changes and elemental composition of its surface are presented. The modification of the tungsten carbide surface structure, in particular, the formation of individual clusters at energie densities of up to 2 J/cm<sup>2</sup>, which can affect the mechanical properties of the material, is shown. Elemental analysis shows a redistribution of Cr, Co, and W, which is presumably related to diffusion processes and the formation of new phases of compounds in the surface layer.</p>
