Defects Arising in Friction Stir Welding of Al–Mg Alloys and Methods for Their Elimination

Abstract—The paper presents results of experimental studies of the effect of methods for eliminating defects in aluminum alloy joints on the mechanical properties and structure of the joints, which were carried out taking Al–Mg alloy 1565ch joints made by the friction stir welding (FSW) as an example. Repeated passes of FSW made to eliminate the weld defects do not have a significant effect on the structure and properties of welded joints of 1565chM alloy sheets. Therefore, it is possible to use two or three repeated passes for back running of defective areas in the form of extended incomplete fusion and defects in the weld root. The ability to repair the nonextended defects in the FSW joints of 1565chM-type weldable aluminum alloys by manual argon-arc welding (AAW) has been established.
