Marine Mammals and Birds of the Kara and Barents Seas in the Dudinka-Murmansk Section: Distribution and Abundance According to Ship Records, Assessment of the Impact of Navigation, and Recommendations for Protection
摘要
Quantitative studies and observations of seabirds and mammals have been performed in the section of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) (Dudinka–Murmansk). The entire route was divided into three segments: the Yenisei River and the Yenisei Gulf, the Kara Sea, and the Barents Sea. We have revealed 34 species of birds assigned to five orders and five species of marine mammals. The abundance of seabirds on the NSR section in summer is the highest in the Yenisei estuary, in the Yenisei Gulf (9.96 individuals/10 km), and in the Barents Sea (8.02 individuals/10 km). In the autumn period, it is much higher in the Kara Sea (43.5 individuals/10 km) than in the Barents Sea (13.3 individuals/10 km) or the Yenisei mouth and the Yenisei Gulf (6.28 individuals/10 km). The vessel attracts species of gulls such as Kittiwake, Glaucous Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, and Herring Gull, which follow it to a distance of 1000 km. The main distance of the response of the Ringed Seal to the vessel movements is 100–300 m. It is recommended that vessels do not pass closer than 500 m from areas where seals congregate. Seabirds and mammals should be monitored in the form of periodic (seasonal) estimates of animal abundance.
