Characteristics of Benthic Biocenoses of Rivers in Diverse Landscapes of the Upper Volga Basin

The zoobenthos was studied on small and medium-sized rivers of the Upper Volga from the village of Selizharovo to the Ivankovo Reservoir in areas slightly affected by economic activity in July 2021. The task was to study the features of river biocenoses in landscapes of different types. The western part of the considered territory is elevated (the Valdai Upland), and the eastern part is low (the Upper Volga Lowland). Watercourses in these areas vary in flow velocity and type of bottom sediments. These two factors result in differences in the composition of bottom biocenoses: the number of species of mayflies, caddisflies, and stoneflies is significantly higher in rivers on uplands than on lowlands. There is a correlation in the order landscape → hydrological characteristics of rivers → bottom biocenoses. Water quality parameters—the Woodiwiss and the biological monitoring working party (BMWP) indexes—testify to uncontaminated watercourses. However, the indicators themselves regular change under the effect of landscape (and hydrological) parameters. Therefore, it is recommended to take into account landscape features of the formation of bottom biocenoses during biological indication of the Upper Volga watercourses.
