Lemna turionifera (Lemnaceae) in the Cryolithozone of Yakutia (North-East Asia) Prefers Hot Summer and Shifts North Due to Climate Warming

Using bioclimatic variables an analysis of the distribution of Lemna turionifera (Lemnaceae) in the cryolithozone of Yakutia (North-East Asia) was conducted. This territory is characterized by a sharply continental climate and widespread permafrost, which are stress factors for species that are located on the northeastern border of their range. The Maxent analysis indicated that temperature seasonality (bio4) and maximum temperature of warmest month (bio5) predominantly influence the current distribution of L. turionifera. We suppose that bio5 has more biological sense in determining the distribution of the duckweed in Yakutia compared to bio4. Under the current trend of climate change according to the moderate climate change model (SSP245 scenario), the frequency of occurrence and abundance of L. turionifera in Yakutia will continue to increase in areas with most continental conditions (with hot summer and the highest range between summer and winter temperatures), first of all, in Central Yakutia, Yana and Oimyakon plateaus, middle Kolyma valley. Having a very high dispersal rate, especially mediated by migratory waterfowl, this species will continue to shift north along large river valleys, as the climate warms and suitable habitats appear, and will increase its abundance there. In areas where summer temperatures have not yet reached the optimal values for duckweed growth, human impact has a positive effect, leading to an increase in water mineralization and nutrient content and making L. turionifera growth possible, which is especially noticeable in recently colonized northern localities.
