Age of Zircons from Sedimentary Rocks of the Elgon Formation of the Ulban Terrane on the Coast of the Ulban Bay

U–Pb dating of detrital zircons from sandstones of the Elgon Formation showed that the formation is no older than Oxfordian in age (early Late Jurassic) and not Middle Jurassic as previously assumed based on the rare flora and fauna finds and the position of the formation within the general stratigraphic section of the Ulban terrane. The three youngest zircons from the Elgon Formation provided an average age of 158 ± 7 Ma. A comparison of the age distribution of clastogenic zircons from the Elgon Formation rocks, on the one hand, and the ages of their possible sources in the eastern Central Asian Fold Belt and the Siberian, North China, and Yangtze platforms, on the other, showed that these sources may be the North China and Yangtze platforms. Moreover, the most likely source of clastogenic zircons from rocks of the Elgon Formation was the southeastern continental margin of the Yangtze Platform. This conclusion agrees with the paleomagnetic data we obtained earlier on the formation of turbidites from the Elgon Formation at near-equatorial latitudes. Using the known paleoreconstruction for the main continental blocks of Eurasia for the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous and paleomagnetic data, the position of turbidites of the Elgon Formation was reconstructed at the time of their emplacement in the Late Jurassic.
