Neuroepigenomic Approaches in Translational Neurobiology: A Tribute to Prof. Nina K. Popova

The postmitotic nature of most neurons in the human and animal brain emphasizes the importance of epigenetic and epigenomic (epitranscriptomic) regulation of CNS functions. Epigenetic processes in the CNS are well studied and include heritable changes without disrupting the DNA sequence. Much less studied, so-called epigenomic regulation involves mechanisms that change the structure and functions of expressed RNA without changing its nucleotide sequence. Recent studies highlight the importance of various epigenomic RNA modifications in the CNS and their impact on the pathogenesis of many brain diseases. The paper examines the mechanisms of epigenomic regulation in the central nervous system and discusses clinical and preclinical data on traditional (rodents) and alternative model objects (zebrafish, Danio rerio), and promising areas of research in this area. The article is dedicated to the memory of Professor Nina Konstantinovna Popova (1929–2024)—a long-term member of the editorial board of the journal “Neurochemistry,” a major scientist and a remarkable person and teacher.
