Abstract

This study assesses metal ion contamination (24 elements) in the waters of the Gulf of Finland using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Water samples were collected from three distinct locations, including areas affected by wastewater treatment facilities and the flood protection complex. The results revealed multiple exceedances of the maximum permissible concentrations for several elements. Potential pollution sources were analyzed, with particular attention to microbiologically influenced corrosion contributing to metal release into the aquatic environment. The findings highlight the urgent need to strengthen environmental monitoring and to develop effective strategies for mitigating anthropogenic pressure on the Gulf of Finland ecosystem.
