Abstract

The importance and value of soils for enabling life on Earth is widely recognized by soil scientists, some environmental researchers, and land users, particularly farmers. However, civil society and decision makers still need to be aware of the important functions and services provided by soils. Soils in general and soil health in particular are currently on the global agenda like never before. This is greatly thanks to advocacy and awareness raising efforts made during the last 15 years, particularly by mainstreaming soils and soil health at the intergovernmental level. The International Year of Soils in 2015 and the UN World Soil Day constituted the main awareness raising and advocacy platforms during this period. Although there has been an improvement, there is still a disconnection particularly between the urban population and soils and its multifunctionality. Therefore, efforts should be made to continue with awareness raising and advocacy actions to consolidate the Pedocene or soil momentum. A forward looking model for connecting people and soils, thus consolidating the soil momentum is presented addressing all stakeholders in society, from rural to urban areas, from children to adults and from students to decision makers. The model is rooted in evidence-based science under a proper soil governance and making use of diverse communication tools and channels. Soils were not taken by granted, but were not appropriately communicated to the right people and with the right voice.
