Abstract

The results of the identification of asteroids approaching both the Earth and Jupiter are presented. From 34 494 near-Earth asteroids (NEAs), a preliminary list is compiled of those capable of approaching Jupiter’s orbit at a distance of 1 AU or closer. There have been 4091 such asteroids. In order to identify close encounters of these asteroids with the giant planet, their orbital evolution is numerically traced over a time interval of approximately 4000 years. It is shown that 1408 asteroids approach Jupiter over the considered time interval. In the next 100 years, 854 objects will approach the planet, with the closest approach (0.075733 AU) by asteroid 2010 XB73 in 2089. Among NEAs approaching Jupiter, most experience close encounters with Earth, with 342 objects passing through Earth’s Hill sphere. The work also presents the results of studying the orbital evolution of three asteroids and positional observations of four objects obtained at Terskol Observatory.
