Abstract <p>The red alga <i>Chondrophycus kangjaewonii</i> (K.W. Nam &amp; C.H. Sohn) D.J. Garbary &amp; J.T. Harper recorded from Peter the Great Bay (Sea of Japan) is the first evidence for the presence of the genus <i>Chondrophycus</i> (J. Takida &amp; Y. Saito) Garbary &amp; J.T. Harper in coastal waters of Russia. The morphology of <i>C. kangjaewonii</i> from Peter the Great Bay is described in detail. Genetic data and information on the biology of the species are presented for the first time.</p>
