Electromagnetic Emissions from the ZEVS Transmitter and Northern Power Transmission Line, Registered on the CSES Satellite

82 Hz radiation from the ZEVS transmitter and 50 Hz emissions from the Northern Transit power transmission line are registered by the low-orbit satellite CSES (altitude ∼500 km) while flying over the Kola Peninsula. The ZEVS signal is detected at distances of 300 to 2300 km, as measured between the subsatellite point and the transmitter. Amplitude of electric component |E| at frequency of 82 Hz is found to be around 2.5 µV/m at 800 km from the transmitter. The corresponding amplitude of magnetic component |B| is found to be around 1.3 pT. The spatial structure of amplitudes of 50 Hz radiation is rearranged dramatically during the satellite’s transition from one power line to another. The amplitude of the electric and magnetic components of 50 Hz radiation registered above the Northern Transit power line is estimated at |E| ≈ 0.5–2.0 µV/m and |B| ≈ 0.5–1.5 pT. Measurements at short distances from the source (several hundred km) agree qualitatively with the results on the modeled spatial structure of the wave field in the upper ionosphere, excited by a horizontal current of a finite length. However, the amplitude of the 82 Hz radiation fell along with distance from the ZEVS transmitter more slowly than in model calculations based on the assumption of a vertical geomagnetic field.
