Abstract <p>The data on hybridization of house mice in nature and experiments accumulated in recent decades are summarized and analyzed. When analyzing house mouse hybridization in natural conditions, emphasis is placed on discussing the accumulated information on the European hybrid zone between <i>Mus musculus musculus</i> and <i>M. m. domesticus</i> and its use in the study of postzygotic reproductive barriers between fertile parental forms. Under experimental conditions, hybridization of the house mice is considered in this review more broadly, but mainly involving same inbred <i>Mus musculus</i> s. str. strains, either isolated from nature or bred from them. The problems of reduced fertility, viability, genomic incompatibility in hybrids, and interspecific and intraspecific hybrid sterility, i.e., the causal factors and their role in morphogenesis, are analyzed. The molecular cytogenetic mechanisms of hybrid sterility caused by various meiotic anomalies associated with impaired fertility are analyzed together with the gene control of the phenomenon observed during hybridization of house mice.</p>
