Abstract <p>Forest fragmentation is an important cause of biodiversity loss and environmental alterations. The aim of this study was to determine the edge effect on the orchid community of the forest-protected reserve “El Malmo” in Tunja-Boyacá, Colombia. Initially, a forest patch was selected from which orchids were collected from the edge towards the interior of the fragment. Analyses of the richness, abundance, and diversity of the groups found were conducted, and the organisms found were correlated with statistically significant physicochemical variables. In total, ten orchid species were recorded in the fragment. Of the three points evaluated, the point established inside the fragment (40 m) showed the highest richness and species diversity. Regarding abundance, the most prominent species were <i>Stelis galeata</i> (Lindl.) Pridgeon and M.W. Chase (Orchidaceae) (25 individuals) and <i>Fernandezia sanguínea</i> (Lindl.) Garay and Dunst. (Orchidaceae) (24 individuals). We found that the edge effect has a significant impact on the richness, abundance, and diversity of orchids evaluated in “El Malmo” Reserve. However, this effect could benefit those orchids that manage to thrive in the predominant conditions of the edge.</p>
