Abstract <p>Induced breeding of <i>Channa punctata</i> was attempted using ovulating agent, ovatide to stimulate ovulation and spawning under controlled captive conditions. Fish were collected from Gomti River, Lucknow city during monsoon period (June–September 2022) and acclimatized for 21 days in a plastic tank (2 × 1 × 1 m). The experiment was conducted with 24 specimens of ripe and mature brooders, selected by their external morphological features. The ovatide doses of 0.30, 0.45 and 0.60 mL/kg body weight (BW) were found to be suitable which led to successful spawning in the fish where courtship activities (jumping, male and female aggression, chasing and curve) were initiated which were significantly different (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001) from that of control group. The latency period (time between the hormone injection and ovulation), showed a significant dose-dependent decrease in the three-dosage groups with highest value observed at lower dose (0.30 mL/kg BW) followed by moderate (0.45 mL/kg BW) and higher dose (0.60 mL/kg BW). The spawning and fertilization rates varied significantly (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05) among all the three-dosage groups with maximum value observed at the medium dosage (0.45 mL/kg BW) of ovatide as compared to higher (0.60 mL/kg BW) and lower (0.30&#xa0;mL/kg BW) dosage. However, the diameter of fertilized eggs of different groups were not significantly different (<i>p</i> &gt; 0.05) from each other.</p>
