A New Approach to the Problem of Tectonophysical Stress Inversion

The problems of determining the parameters of the stress tensor in tectonophysics using objective functions based on the Wallace hypothesis are considered. A new approach to tectonophysical stress inversion is proposed, based on an objective function that takes into account the balance between the energy of elastic unloading and work against frictional forces in a blocky geoenvironment. The use of this function allows eliminating the 10°–15° error typical for Wallace’s hypothesis when there is a deficiency of conjugate shear systems, ensuring the orientation of fractures in accordance with the Mohr–Coulomb theory. The process of dynamic adaptation of a system of discontinuities to external loading is analyzed from the viewpoint of nonequilibrium thermodynamics and Ziegler’s principle. Variations in the intensity of seismic dissipation are considered as indicators of the stages of self-organization of the geoenvironment and the change of its deformation modes.
