First Data on the Distribution of Mixed-Layered Glauconite–Nontronite Clay Minerals in Sediments of the Puy des Folles Hydrothermal Field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge)

A core of brownish-green sediment, atypical of this sector of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, was recovered from the Puy des Folles hydrothermal field during cruise no. 46 of R/V Professor Logatchev in 2023. The sediment is patchily distributed around deep-sea polymetallic sulfide orebodies. On-board and laboratory studies revealed single-phase mineral composition of the sediment groundmass, which corresponds to mixed-layered glauconite–nontronite. The features of the distribution of authigenic clays within ore fields and changes in their structural features along the section, as well as the physicochemical characteristics of pore waters, indicate that the formation of deep-sea glauconite–nontronite was affected by several stages hydrothermal activity: (1) the formation of ferruginous smectites from diffuse hydrothermal fluids along the periphery of orebodies and (2) subsequent formation of mica layers in smectites due to K accumulation from seawater and/or the involvement of K and Fe from the hydrothermal fluid by structural transformation of smectite layers or as a result of their sequential dissolution and precipitation of micaceous layers. Based on a close link with hydrothermal processes, occurrence at the periphery of orebodies, and brownish-green color visible during seafloor TV profiling, the glauconite–nontronite sediments can be used as a prospecting indicator during deep-sea polymetallic sulfide exploration.
