Abstract

A micropaleontological study of the Kathikas Fm.’s gravitational mixtites (the lower part of the sedimentary cover of the Troodos Ophiolite Complex) revealed assemblages of Upper Maastrichtian and Lower Danian planktonic and benthic foraminifera and nannofossils in syngenetic interlayers of calcareous clays, marls, and limestones. These findings allowed us to refine the stratigraphic interval of the Kathikas Fm. to the Upper Maastrichtian–Lower Danian. The Kathikas Fm.'s mixtites were formed immediately after the period of the nappe formation, during which the Troodos and Mamonia nappe were formed (general structure of Cyprus). Therefore, the final nappe formation is supposed to have occurred during the Late Maastrichtian or immediately before it.
