Abstract <p>The first results of K–Ar dating of rocks of Matua Island (Central Kuril Islands) that occur in the basement of the Neopleistocene–Holocene volcano and belong to the earliest stages of magmatic activity, are presented. Nine age values ranging from 3.9 to 1.02 Ma are measured for rocks from the Yurlov and Dvoinaya sequences (formations). These sequences formed between the Middle Pliocene prior to the Gelasian (3.9 ± 0.3–2.02 ± 0.13 Ma) and in the Gelasian (2.09 ± 0.14 Ma), respectively. An extrusive dome of Mt. Kruglaya and a subvolcanic body of the Krepost cliff (Ainu Bay) formed at 1.02 ± 0.13 and 1.08 ± 0.15 Ma, respectively.</p>
