Abstract <p>The effect of vertical and horizontal turbulent heat fluxes on the air temperature variance under conditions of temperature inversions of different intensity is considered. It is shown that the neglect of horizontal turbulent heat fluxes under these conditions in the existing models can lead to significant underestimation of the mixing layer height.</p>
