Expression Dynamics of Carotenoid and Starch Metabolism Genes in the Process of Maturation of Maize Grains Is Associated with the Transition to a Dormant State

In maize grains at the final maturation stages (1–9), the expression profile of genes encoding key enzymes of carotenoid biosynthesis (ZmPSY1, ZmPSY2, ZmCrtRB1) and starch phosphorylation (ZmGWD1) was determined, and the carotenoid content was measured. The expression level of the ZmPSY1 gene in grains was found to increase with maturation, which was consistent with an increase in the intensity of yellow color of the grains. A stable expression profile with minor differences between stages 1–4 and 6–9 was typical for ZmPSY2; a rapid increase in expression at stages 6–8 and a sharp decrease at stage 9 was characteristic of ZmCrtRB1; and an increase in expression up to the stage 6 followed by a decrease at stages 7–9 was characteristic of ZmGWD1. At stage 9, the level of ZmPSY1 transcripts in grains from the lower part of the cob was shown to be ~45 times higher than in grains from the upper and middle parts, which was positively consistent with the grain color and carotenoid content.
