Plant Adaptations under Multiple Environmental Stresses: Emphasizing Drought, Heat, and Pathogens

Plant responses to environmental stresses are among the major challenges of world agricultural production. The global warming phenomenon and subsequent changes represent not only the main abiotic stresses such as heat and drought, and, particularly, their combination, but also additional biological threats and pathogen outbreaks in the plant environment. Plants share physiological and molecular responses to both abiotic and biotic stresses. Deciphering these responses, especially to abiotic-biotic stress combinations, such as drought- and heat-pathogen combinations, may be useful to develop measures for improved stress tolerance in agricultural crops, eventually resulting in an increase in plant growth and survival. Reactive oxygen species, phytohormones production and calcium signaling form a central part of plant responses to multiple individual stresses. The present review provides an overview of plant responses to combined stresses including drought, heat and their respective interactions with pathogens. Additionally, common plant adaptations, emphasizing ROS, hormone regulation, and calcium signaling will be described as the shared components in stress conditions.
