Abstract <p>Throughout the first half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Serbia was central to Russia’s policy in the Balkans—a coherent course of support for the Serbian leadership. During the July Crisis of 1914, it was Russia that became the de facto guarantor of the independence of the Kingdom of Serbia, and during the outbreak of the First World War, it supported the Serbs not only politically but also economically and militarily. At the same time, based on the realities of the First World War, Russian diplomacy had to adjust the goals and objectives of its Balkan policy. The latter became the subject of the author’s research, which was based on documents from the Archive of Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire (AVPRI) and the Russian State Military Historical Archive (RGVIA).</p>
