Abstract <p>First Serbian minister was sent to the Russian Empire a year after Serbia gained its official independence in 1878, and almost immediately upon arriving in St. Petersburg witnessed one of the assassination attempts on emperor Alexander II. Coming from a smaller, recently reborn country, Serbian diplomats probably expected much greater stability from the huge friendly empire. However, the tendency of terrorist activity in St. Petersburg was meticulously reported on by various Serbian diplomats, playing an extremely important role in building the image of Russia in the educated strata of Serbian society. Those diplomatic reports are a unique source on the imagology of Russia in Serbia.</p>
